Check out 1 Thessalonians 1:4-5 for today’s devotional thought.
The gospel was more than words for the Thessalonians. This was the power of God! The Holy Spirit was present as a guarantee. Conviction was real in their lives.
The people of Thessalonica made profound decisions in light of the gospel. Even when a mob came to shut it down, these new believers continued to trust God. When Paul and Silas had to sneak out of town, the new believer were convinced the gospel was real!
The gospel travels via words. Yet, it becomes clear that God has chosen a person (v4) when evidence of faith shows up.
Sometimes, people trick themselves into believing they are walking with God. How? Because they intelligently agree with the words of the gospel. But, the kingdom of God is not a matter of talk, but of power (1 Corinthians 2:4). 1 Thessalonians 1:4-5, makes it clear that there is always evidence of the Holy Spirit’s power. Jesus said He often shows up in conviction (John 16:8-11). Conviction leads to confession, repentance, and life change.
The practical question I’m thinking about right now is: how could help a friend who you suspect might be a religious person, but not a born again believer?
